A wee puzzle
You have:
One empty 3 litre container
One empty 5 litre container
One set of scales
And all the water you need.
How can you get exactly 4 liters of water when you measure it's weight (or mass for those that are pedantic)
The rule is you are only allowed to use the scales once, for the final weighing in. (no pouring in water whilst a container is on the scales.....that's tooo easy)

Re: A wee puzzle
Fill each half way up, giving 2.5l in one and 1.5 in the other, then poor the 1.5l into the 2.5 giving 4l?

Re: A wee puzzle
Nope, how can you be sure they're exactly half full without measuring them?

Re: A wee puzzle
fill up the 5ltr then pour the water into the 3 ltr leaving 2ltr in the 5
tip the 3 ltr out then put the remaining 2 ltr in the 3 ltr bottle
fill up the 5 again then top up the 3ltr this should remove 1ltr out of the five leaving you with the four!

Re: A wee puzzle
No way!
I've just watched this on Die Hard, on the TV!
That was very weird. But yeah, didn't catcht he answer to the puzzle. It was something to do with the air in the 3ltr tub when the 5lts tub was filled, transfering that got them the 4ltrs..... I think!

Re: A wee puzzle
That's exactly the film where we got it from........although they didn't tell you how they got the 2 litres in the first place! At one point it was empty and then they had water in it!!
Just thought we'd start a thread to get folks thinking

Re: A wee puzzle
Yeah, go for it!

I thought they diddled it on the film too and then whilst trying to work it out I saw the post on the forum. Very weird experience. It's like you're all watching me lol

Re: A wee puzzle
You have to love a bit of Die Hard with a vengeance!! Although I still think that the original in the Nakatomi Plaza is the best one
