    Default Log Burners

Anyone know or able to advise?

My folks have a barn in France and have just fitted a log burner in the main living part. The wall in which it is situated is solid stone.

The flue runs about 4 meters up and then out through the roof.
The flue itself comprises of 3 or 4 pieces which join together (approx 1m long). It is just one outer tube - that is, with no inner tube (if that makes sense?)

As far as I can make out from their description, each section is 'belled' at one end in order to allow the other section to fit into it.

The problem they are having is that each joint is 'letting by' and allowing some smoke to escape.

The question: What sealant can they use to stop smoke escaping from each joint, bearing in mind that the flue itself gets very hot??

I have no idea what they have used to seal it prior (if anything).

And they have been told to install each section with the 'bell' towards the top (in order that the next section can slot down onto it, to prevent soot falling through). Is this right?

Many thanks and Merry Christmas to all
    Scott

Hello Scott, I've only just joined the forum and I see you posted your enquiry in Nov 09 so you have probably sorted it by now. If not, I have done this sort of thing before and I got good results using 'Fireclay' or in some cases, the (Nowadays non asbestos) type of cotton packing used to seal fire front panels.
