I think (we blame the recession directly, though that's a term for the result of something) that it's the sub-prime lending that caused this. So that's the thing that caused the housing boom. So really, the greed of the banks.

So we're not going to see that greed again, now most offending banks are part owned by the public. And because the government will not want to cause the same lack-of-spending issues.

So next year will be better than this year, because the economy won't be failing MORE, though it won't be achieving much. Though it can't be getting worse.

So if you're doing okay now, you'll do better next year. If you're not doing well now, you need to change tactics, in my opinion, obviously.

    Batton down the hatches

If people think we are going to get out of this without alot more pain................

The government is going to have to stop spending/printing money backed with nothing and let the economy take over, only proplem is what economy !!

Any gains you have managed in this indian summer, should be horded away to help cover the next few years

Bang on. Uk is bankrupt. Unfortunatley the only thing keeping this country going is artifically low interest rates and printing money. After the general election next June there is going to be some serious pain. This Govt are just trying to keep it sweet until the election. Whoever wins will then have to address the real problems in the economy and that will mean serious cutbacks and higher taxes and interest rates!!!. All IMHO of course

i have one two week job booked in for jan but no other enquiries as yet im planning a change of tactics at the moment and i will be putting them into affect soon as the last 2 years have been a bit rubbish for different reasons this year has been better but not like 2007 so i am hopefull that 2010 is going to be a good one however i agree with saveloy that there could be things to come that might rock the boat

but lets try and think positive!

I'm hopeful that next year will be good for my biz , so far i have only had a slight drop off ref work but the work i do is so niche = restoration of victorian floors that the recession doesn't really affect me.

My biz partner of 20 years did bail though cos one of the reasons i get work is that i have to travel both here & abroad so i will be looking to train up someone next year.
hope work picks up for us all !

I heard on Sky News that most of the world is coming out of recession but he said "unfortunately we wont see increases in the UK economy for a couple of years at least". He was talking about the FTSE 100 and business in general.

With that in mind I think it's going to be a tough one for all. Though we'll see what happens and take it as it comes lads, as always.

I wouldn't know what advice to give in these tough times. Just make sure you're keep all options open, and don't close any doors that perhaps you would have in good times.
