Default To old to start an apprenticeship?

    Hi there,

I am 27 and considering a carpentry course starting in September. I have read many times that employers will only consider apprentices between the ages of 16 and 24. Will I have difficulty when looking for jobs aged 27/28?

    All feedback welcome.

Some companies do tend to want younger apprentices as they can pay them a lower wage and work them like donkeys basically as anybody who has completed an apprenticeship at a young age will know. (nothing wrong as such with this as you do learn to appreciate a good wage later on!)
I would say that 27 isn't a bad age at all and being older and wanting to do a course shows you are willing to learn and not straight out of school being forced into a job
You may have to fund the course yourself however as most companies do not need to pay for younger apprentices courses as its generally funded (this also puts companies off as they sometimes misunderstand and think they have to pay)
The down side for yourself is that you will obviously start off on a lower wage than you may have been on previously but you will reap the rewards!
Good luck, hope you get what you want
    Dave

Thanks for your advice Dave. It's very much appreciated. Just need to get out there now and find someone to take me on.

I mentioned carpentry but plumbing is also a career that I am considering. I don't suppose you know of any companies in the south who are taking on apprentices at the moment?
